Our Story

In 1977, Gary O’Reilly founded what would become O’Reilly’s Furniture and Amish Gallery, with the mission of providing the highest-quality furniture and exceptional service to each and every customer that walked into the building. His friendly demeanor, ability to make anyone feel like family, and desire to connect customers with the perfect furniture for their unique needs, made him a permanent and well-loved fixture in the Libertyville area.

It is a testament to Gary’s involvement in the community and the quality of his products that he still has returning customers from the days when he was merely a fledgling businessman starting out in the furniture industry. The connections he made with so many families in Northern Illinois made his job enjoyable, but it also made it difficult when he decided it was time to retire. When he finally knew he had to call it a career, he searched for ways to ensure the store would survive without losing the culture of family he had worked so hard to build.

Gary found his answer when he turned to good family friends, the Walsh’s, with the offer to carry on his legacy by running the store. The Walsh’s took over in the summer of 2018 with the intentions of fulfilling all of the promises Gary made throughout his 40 years in business. He now believes that the store’s tradition as a “family-owned and operated” business is stronger than ever, and he has helped the store in numerous ways since retiring, in order to ensure that those customers who have been returning since 1977 experience the same service, attention to detail, and quality of furniture that they did when he first opened his doors.

One of the most important elements that O’Reilly’s Furniture and Amish Gallery has maintained since Gary’s retirement has been the connection to the talented Amish craftsmen who hand-make the pieces to be of a quality that he likens more to “family heirlooms” than “furniture.”

“The benefit of working with such skilled artisans is not only that their quality is unmatched, but that the customer has a chance to customize their furniture to get exactly what they want,” new owner Mike Walsh explains. “We want to work with the customer and the craftsmen to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that will work perfectly in people’s homes, pieces that they will want to pass down for generations.”

O’Reilly’s specializes in custom dining sets, entertainment centers, bedroom sets, sofas, sectionals, and recliners, all made in America. It features a specialty line of Amish-made seating, where the customer can choose from more than 1,200 fabrics and leathers. But more important than quantity, quality has always been the story of O’Reilly’s, as Walsh explains, “Buying furniture is a big investment, so we believe that people should be able to get the highest quality they can at an affordable price.”

This attention to quality mirrors the values that Gary O’Reilly set forth when he first started his business in 1977, and he’s proud to see it continue today. As he says, “If you treat people right and give them a good product, they’ll be back.”
